Law & Order SVU Season 14 Episode 24

Genre: Crime, Drama, Mystery, Thriller
Episode Name: Her Negotiation
Air date: 5/22/2013
Summary: After making a seemingly routine arrest of a man exposing himself in Central Park, Detective Rollins has a bad feeling about the suspect and calls upon the entire SVU squad and ADA Barba to help. With no way to discover the suspect’s true identity, he masterfully outplays them at every turn. A shocking theory comes to light, and as Barba’s trial comes to a close, the situation rapidly escalates and Detective Benson is put into mortal danger.

“Traumatic Wound” covered a lot of ground, featuring a hard to crack case of a gang sexual assault which was both complicated and helped by a witness with PTSD. The sexual assault case likely was geared towards keeping the interest of the younger demographic, but the case of PTSD could be relatable to those who served in the military over a wide range of age groups. PTSD, to those who have served in the military, has taken many names in the past, starting in WWI when it was often called “shell shock” (often as a result of being under heavy fire/bombing) and in later wars through WWII, the Korean, and Vietnam wars it was often known as combat stress/fatigue.  PTSD can be caused by a broad range of triggers not necessarily related to war (an SVU example is Benson’s own PTSD from her sexual assault). In my opinion, the one-size-fits-all term PTSD doesn’t begin to encompass the disorders affecting military personnel who have been in combat situations.

Opinions about those suffering from PTSD in the military has also changed over the decades; going back to WWI and II, stress from combat was considered shameful and an embarrassment. The Vietnam war – where hundreds of thousands of young men were drafted and had to serve in a war most of the country did not want – brought back large numbers of soldiers suffering from the horror of what they experienced; the numbers too large to ignore.  Over time, the stresses of war were better understood and the stigma of suffering from PTSD from war diminished.  Having known Vietnam vets who returned with unbearable mental side effects from that war, I believe that there should be a better term to describe this condition and better identification and treatment for those currently serving who exhibit even the mildest form of stress from combat.

Frank’s (played perfectly by Eion Bailey) inability to recall the details of the sexual attack may seem hard to believe for someone who has never known someone with combat related PTSD, but in this episode, the writers got this right. Sometimes the slightest trigger can startle and cause confusion and along with it, memory problems and behavioral issues. Amaro, who later admitted he realized his wife’s own PTSD too late to save their marriage, was on the ball enough to spot Frank’s problem. I was, however, surprised that Rollins was too quick to dismiss Amaro’s opinion on the matter, as she’s usually the one that’s been a little better at profiling people.

Offspring Season 4 Episode 1

Genre: Drama, Family
Episode Name: Season 4, Episode 1
Air date: 5/22/2013
Summary: Nina and Patrick prepare for parenthood as Billie struggles to cope with Nina’s pregnancy. Meanwhile, a new arrival sparks interest at the hospital.

No, Offspring isn’t a dramatization of the life of popular 90’s pop-punk sellouts The Offspring. Instead it’s a dramedy from the folks behind The Secret Life Of Us who haven’t deviated too far from the young people who look for love while using voice-over formula that worked the last time around. They even trot Deborah Mailman out just so the line between the two shows is blurred even further.

Offspring is Channel 10’s attempt to cash in on the Australian family soap opera with minor bursts of comedy genre that has reaped huge rewards for Channel 7 with Packed To The Rafters. While Rafters pitches itself to the broadest possible audience, Offspring has its heart set on the 18 to 40 year old women who were the backbone of Secret Life’s success. Offspring tells the story of Dr. Nina Proudman (Asher Keddie from Underbelly and Hawke) who narrates us through her busy life of delivering babies, looking after the rest of her ramshackle family, coping with her crazy ex-husband and fantasizing about her hot new co-worker.

What starts off as a romantic jaunt with Nina batting her eyes at hot Dr. Chris (Don Hany from East West 101) soon gets sidetracked with her bitchy and dim sister Billie (Kat Stewart from Underbelly, :30 Seconds, Tangle) trying to figure out her real estate career and men problems, before ultimately turning into the story of Cherie (Deborah Mailman), a whom who’s having a baby that unknowingly belongs to Nina’s dad Darcy (John Waters). We also get to meet Nina’s man-whore brother Jimmy who moves in with Darcy’s ex-wife and Nina’s mum Geraldine.

Nina is overworked and under-loved but ultimately she’s a boring lead whose path seems pretty well pre-destined. Will she get back with her crazy ex who loves explosives? Or is she more likely to have an on-again/off-again/on-again fling with Dr. Chris? I think we all know how that will play out. That’s the big problem with Offspring; it doesn’t really deviate too far off the beaten track. 30-somethings with complicated lives just looking for that little piece of happiness while their older parents who should be wiser still haven’t found exactly what they’re looking for either.

There’s a moment early on in the pilot where Billie grows sick of her lusty almost-relationship with a grubby gardener, played by comedian and general all-round prong Eddie Perfect. She needs a grown-up man so she goes on a blind date. Predictably enough the blind date goes horrible but not in any real way, you see the date talks about Star Wars a lot. Star Wars is of course television writer shorthand for ‘massive loser’ and Billie longs for her gardener hunk with his no shoes, scruffy look unshaven chin and pet dog. Unfortunately I found myself wishing I could spend more time with the Star Wars loser than with the complaining dimwits who populate the rest of the show.

Every character comes in different shades of annoying; they range from the extra gratingly annoying Billie, to the annoyingly ridiculous explosive expert ex-husband who blows everything up, right down to the extra dull and annoying too-perfect Dr. Chris. Offspring doesn’t come out the gates flying but then history reminds us that Secret Life’s first episode wasn’t exactly riveting television. Offspring could over time grow into a serviceable comedy drama that reminds us of us, but this first episode doesn’t instil a lot of confidence by offering up a mildly irritating snoozy comedy drama that’s light on the comedy and heavy on whiny soap opera predictability.

Modern Family Season 4 Episode 24

Genre: Comedy
Episode Name: Goodnight, Gracie
Air date: 5/22/2013
Summary: Everyone flies down to Florida to be with Phil after his mom’s passing. Claire helps Phil with Gracie’s last wish for Frank, and the kids reflect on the gifts grandma left for them. Gloria has to contend with an outstanding arrest warrant in Florida, Cam finds himself fitting right into an elderly women’s group at Frank’s retirement community, and Jay runs into a pivotal person from his past.

ust four episodes left in the fourth season of Modern Family. It’s been a season of ups and downs, but with this episode it’s clear that the show has plateaued. It wasn’t a bad episode—there was a Gil Thorpe storyline that wasn’t 100 percent obnoxious—but “Career Day” was just OK, which is basically what we’ve learned to expect from this show.

The episode centers on Luke and Manny’s Career Day at school. Phil gets to speak about the love of his life: residential real estate. Always over-the-top, Phil creates an interactive video for his presentation, only for it to be wrecked by his archenemy Gil Thorpe. The kids love the Gil Pickles (not a match to the Phil-o-cases), and Phil leaves in a huff.

With the extra time, the teacher asks Claire to talk about being a stay-at-home mom. She gets into a fight with a middle-school student, which somehow leads to Gil offering her a job. She and Phil have mini cut-away fights about it. But in the end he wants her to be fulfilled, so he encourages her to do it. She quits a day later.

A recent episode of How I Met Your Mother addressed the issue of stay-at-home moms and careers. Lily delivered a tugging-at-your-heartstrings performance of how she feels like being a mother is killing her dreams. It was touching, yet fit seamlessly into the comedy. Modern Family really missed an opportunity with their version. Not only did Claire not end up realizing her dreams, but her family goes right back to not appreciating her.

Episode Name: Elaine’s Big Day
Air date: 5/14/2013
Summary: Cece’s wedding day finds Jess and Nick making a decision about their relationship. Meanwhile, Schmidt schemes with a typically overenthusiastic Winston to sabotage the nuptials, although a shocking announcement may be bigger than anything he plans

This season’s penultimate episode really felt like a moment to breathe, didn’t it Newbies? With last week’s major gearshift in play and next week’s season finale in the wings, it was nice to have the chance to process. Even better,

this moment was accompanied by some unexpected sweetness from Nick and a reminder that Jess is more than just an object to be desired — not to mention some independent romantic developments between Cece/Shivrang and Schmidt/Elizabeth that will make next week’s wedding-stravaganza more complicated and dynamic. It wasn’t the most high-octane episode, but I’d argue that’s for the best. And so…

We rejoined the roomfriends the morning after. Nick woke up with a goofy smile on his face, not even slightly freaked out as he leaned in to gently caress Jess’s back and give her a peck on the shoulder. Then, seeing that she was abnormally still, he started to freak out. Of course she was alive, but that didn’t stop him from reaching over to check her pulse. Ohhhh, Nick. They giggled cutely, only a little awkwardly, before he told her to stay in bed while he took care of something.

As he departed, she found a giant soft pretzel under his pillow (random, but ha!). In the kitchen, Nick prepared his version of a romantic breakfast — ridiculously undercooked eggs, a mangled half grapefruit, a slice of pie (“dessert!”), a glass of orange juice, and a Heisler beer. (He considered putting a daisy in the beer bottle, then behind his ear, before abandoning it entirely.) Bless his heart, that Nick. He’s adorable but not exactly skilled at presentation.

Just as Nick began heading back into his bedroom, he ran into Jess’s dad Bob (Rob Reiner), who clearly didn’t remember Nick’s name. Bob mentioned he’d come to town for Cece’s wedding and that “Wilson” had let him in. He asked about the tray of “lady food” Nick was carrying, and Nick lied it was for “Wilson” on his birthday. Winston knew it was a lie but begrudgingly accepted because, well, what else was he getting?

A bit later, since Bob apparently hadn’t noticed that Jess had emerged from Nick’s room in Nick’s shirt (and nothing else). So Jess had gotten dressed and set about convincing Nick to keep his yap shut lest Bob freak out. Flash back to a bunch of Shriners-type guys riding miniature pick-up trucks in biker gang-style circles around a boy Jess had kissed in elementary school. Nick was down that plan, but things hit a hitch when Jess was called in for a last-minute substitute teaching gig that could turn into a full-time position. If she wanted to get back into teaching kids,

it was now or never. So Jess headed off to her unexpected substituting gig — which was mostly wrangling Blackboard Jungle-style hooligans and a vaguely sexually harassing, baby goat-obsessed principal played by Curtis Armstrong (a.k.a. Booger from Revenge of the Nerds) — all while juggling Maid of Honor responsibilities for an exhausted Cece (more on that later).

Episode Name: Reunion Part II – Stand Up, Throw Down
Air date: 5/14/2013
Summary: Shannon goes toe-to-toe with the other ladies in an all-out fist fight. Meanwhile, Nancy and Stephanie’s sexy hook-up becomes the main topic of discussion.

Parents need to know that this negative reality show from the creators of The Real World doesn’t fall far from the tree, zeroing in on conflict and bad behavior and passing them off as entertainment. The series follows a group of women who were selected to live together because of their inclination for negative behavior, which ranges from lying to physical violence.

Don’t let the TV-14 rating fool you: The antics and examples on display here aren’t fit for teens (or anyone, for that matter). Conflicts between cast members — which sometimes include physical fighting — are the focus of the show. Cast members are often seen drinking excessively, which sometimes serves as a motivator for more violent behavior.

Brought to you by the creators of The Real World, THE BAD GIRLS CLUB focuses on seven strong young women who pride themselves in being both strong and unwilling to conform to what society expects of them, proving their point by engaging in outrageously bad behavior. The members of the club include aggressive Aimee, who believes that other women are generally out to get her; Jodie, a conservative office worker who likes to have fun after hours; Ty, a tough-talking former hustler; Kerry, whose recklessness has sidetracked her country music career; adult entertainer Leslie; spoiled, angry Ripsi; and Zara, who’s known in her small town as the “wild child.

While living in their posh Los Angeles house, the women try to become friends while coping with one another’s backstabbing, lying, cheating, and flirting. Manipulative and deviously resourceful, they all engage in their own brand of destructive behavior in order to have fun, get want they want, and — sometimes — get even with the other women in the house.

Like any reality show, The Bad Girls Club has some soap opera-ish storylines, as well as some soul-searching among cast members as they begin to think about their own behavior as well as their relationships with their roommates. But the show’s real focus is on the ladies’ excessive arguing and physical fighting.

While the housemates may believe that their aggressive, often-outlandish behavior empowers them, the show presents them as a group of catty, irrational girls who are more interested in creating a spectacle of themselves. It’s an extremely negative, stereotypical portrayal of strong women and offers a very misguided interpretation of what assertive, self-confident women are really all about.

Awkward Season 3 Episode 6 For 15-year old Jenna Hamilton, played by Ashley Rickards, life is forever changed after an accident turns into a horrible misunderstanding. Narrated in the first-person voice of Jenna’s blog posts, “Awkward.” captures the humor within the struggles and experiences everyone can relate to from their formative years. The series picks up in the aftermath of the accident as she must deal with a new not-so-fun stigma, while at the same time managing the other daily drama that comes with being a teenager. From a secret relationship with a popular guy, to being undermined by a mean girl, and parents who just don’t get it – Jenna’s misfortune will eventually serve as the catalyst for amazing change, but it’s not without some missteps and mishaps along the way.

Awkward Season 3 Episode 6 Jake and Tamara had an unexpected hook-up in the Season 2 finale, and Reed acknowledged that although Jenna gave BFF Tamara her blessing to date Jenna’s ex, “It doesn’t matter if you say ‘go for it,’ it’s still gonna be strange. Tamara and Jenna weren’t together over the summer, so Jenna doesn’t really know anything that’s progressed. When we come back in the first episode, there’s definitely that feeling of separation and having to get back into the swing of things and have that conversation about what’s happened.”

Awkward Season 3 Episode 6 Davern said that although Jake might never have looked at Tamara in a romantic light before, things have definitely evolved since we last saw them. “They had this impulsive moment in the car [in the finale] and he has that hero complex so he saw a damsel in distress and had this moment with her, and I don’t know if he thought anything would happen with her going forward. You go to Europe, you have that summer camp syndrome, maybe the chaperones weren’t around that much … I think they had a really fun time and found things in each other that they really liked.”

Awkward Season 3 Episode 6 On this side of the pond, Mirchoff promised that Matty and Jenna’s time together at camp has helped them “grow this budding relationship and learn about each other and deepen the relationship — it’s hit a new level.”

Awkward Season 3 Episode 6 Still, this being “Awkward,” the foursome will have their share of obstacles. “Matty and Jenna were extremely comfortable with each other,” Mirchoff observed. “Jake and Tamara come back and things have gotten different again, school’s started so how are they gonna act in front of people? Matty was insecure about his relationships [before] — is he gonna be the same? There’s some insecurities with Jake, Matty’s best friend — are there any residual feelings left there? How are they all going to hang out together without any tension or awkwardness?”

Awkward Season 3 Episode 6 According to Davern, “As far as Jenna and Jake are concerned, they had that great friendship to begin with. Even after she broke his heart, he was able to forgive and move on, so he and Jenna are great friends, and I think the writers do a really great job of tackling that kind of situation with Matty and Tamara maybe sometimes feeling like a third wheel because Jake and Jenna have this great past. It’s gonna get awkward, there’s gonna be some weird moments, but that makes for fun TV.”

Awkward Season 3 Episode 6 Outside of the quadrangle, resident school bully Sadie Saxton will have her share of trouble this year, according to Tarlov: “Sadie has a lot of things happen to her in the beginning of the season. We’ll see a lot of it in the first episode … We do see Sadie dressing a little bit differently, there will be a distinct difference. It’ll be talked about at school; rumors are flying. There’s some pretty life-changing stuff that happens to Sadie and we’ll get that all at the top.”

Awkward Season 3 Episode 6 Fortunately (or perhaps unfortunately, from Sadie’s perspective), Sadie will have clueless best friend Lissa to lend a supportive ear. “There’s some interesting stuff between Sadie and Lissa, you get to see them both go through a pretty big change this year, separately,” Grammer previewed. “It’s interesting to see how they react to the other’s situation. You definitely see how they’re there for each other and how their friendship really works.”

On “Awkward,” the adults are sometimes as hilariously immature as the teenagers, but both DeLoach and Lydic promise that Lacey and Val will be a strong presence for Jenna this season.

Awkward Season 3 Episode 6 “Jenna thought that her mom was this one person and then last season revealed that her mom was always standing by her and always there for her. I think that reveal really shifted their relationship, so now it’s in a place that it’s never been,” DeLoach admitted. “Jenna’s trusting her mom and Lacey’s really trying to step up and be the mother that she personally never had and the mother that Jenna has always needed.”

Awkward Season 3 Episode 6 Having been through her own share of relationship drama last year with Jenna’s father, Kevin (Mike Faiola), Lacey is well-positioned to offer her daughter advice, for once. “[Jenna and Matty] are going to struggle in their relationship, the same way that Lacey and Kevin did, because Kevin wasn’t always there for her. He left a lot and he wasn’t always dependable, so that means that her daughter’s probably going to have to struggle with that. Kevin’s a great guy with a good heart and he’s a great dad … [and] Lacey sees that Matty’s a really good kid, and that’s the most important thing: do you have a good heart, do you make my daughter happy? Matty has done that.”

Awkward Season 3 Episode 6 At school, Jenna will have kooky Vice Principal Val on her side, and according to Lydic, the duo is “as strong as ever. The fun part about their relationship is it started with Val forcing herself on her and Jenna reluctantly having to walk into her office, and there’s a nice shift that’s happened where Jenna has seen the good in Val like Val has seen the good in Jenna.”

Still, Lydic did preview that this season will see “the power shifting” for Val and that she’ll be “going back to her roots.” She’ll also have some “fun stuff with Ming [Jessica Lu]” and Matty, and will team up with Jake for an installment of “Awkward’s” tie-in webseries.

“There is a thread within the show [that ties into] the webisodes,” Lydic revealed. “It’s a bit different, tonally — it’s a little more experimental. We’re playing with different genres from webisode to webisode, and there’s a little bit of a mystery I’m following.” Game of Thrones Season 3 Episode 7

To find out more about the mystery Val will be trying to solve, as well as Sadie’s big change and the evolving love square, tune in for Season 3 of “Awkward,” Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on MTV. Awkward Season 3 Episode 6

Genre: Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi
Episode Name: The Big Snag
Air date: 5/13/2013
Summary: The series follows U.S. Secret Service agents Myka Bering (Joanne Kelly) and Peter Lattimer (Eddie McClintock) when they are assigned to the government’s secret Warehouse 13 for supernatural “artifacts”. It is located in a barren landscape in South Dakota, and they initially regard the assignment as punishment. As they go about their assignments to retrieve missing Warehouse 13 artifacts and investigate reports of new ones, they come to understand the importance of what they are doing. They are enthusiastically joined by young, hip, brilliant techno-wiz Claudia Donovan (Allison Scagliotti).

This week’s episode wasn’t the strongest we’ve seen from Warehouse 13. We have some good closure over Leena’s death and a peek at how things will run in her absence, but the main artifact plot wasn’t that engaging, went in some strange directions, and didn’t even bother to explain the artifact itself. Also, while I love the use of popular culture gags in the show, this episode seemed to be overstuffed with them, perhaps in an attempt to lighten the rather dark subject of terrorism.

The main plot for this week dealt with eco-terrorism. While I normally applaud the writers’ handling of sensitive subjects, this episode felt like they couldn’t decide how they felt about the bombing of sites and equipment you don’t approve of. The one man who was convicted and sentenced for the group’s crimes died in prison, even though he was probably in his early thirties, one woman died of cancer, two of the members were murdered by a vengeful brother, and the last member was a sympathetic character who served no prison time and justified her actions by saying she was young and idealistic. Lines like “do you ever have any regrets over the whole, you were by definition a terrorist, thing?” seemed flippant, while the killing off the rest seemed extreme.

Still, we had some strong points here. Pete did well in his usual role as comedic relief, and while the Yogi Bear thing played out early, his speech to the regents in the beginning was by turns moving and giggle inspiring, and his use of Ferngully made me actually laugh out loud. The writers also get major props for The Lorax meets Red Dawn, but lose them again with the extremely heavy handed advertising for Prius and Bing.

The second half of the episode took us through Artie’s process of dealing with Leena’s absence in the Warehouse as well as his own misplaced anger, sorrow and fear over his involvement in her death. As he goes through the Warehouse performing Leena’s usual chores, we see a bit more of the Warehouse, Jinx battle a gargoyle, and how items are placed when Artie attempts to find a location for the porthole from the airship Norge. A magic meditation circle reads the artifact’s energy and gives instructions on where it should go in the Warehouse. It’s nice that the job goes to the resident Buddhist, Jinx, and it was fun to see Myka, Artie, and Jinx working together to put the Warehouse in order. Also the magic circle thing was a pretty cool addition.

The final scene where Claudia and Artie make up is lovely, and it gives Artie the courage to watch Leena’s video signature statement. Watching the video and apologizing to Leena on screen seems to give him the closure he needs. I like the final shot of a smiling Leena. I’m still unsure that she’s permanently gone, and wouldn’t be surprised to see her spirit enter into another episode or two, but she does seem to be permanently deceased, and for that I am sorry.

Episode Name: The Longest Day
Air date: 5/13/2013
Summary: Romantic connections heat up between two couples — Miles and Nora and Charlie and Jason — but disastrous drone strikes from the Militia threaten them all. An assassination attempt on Monroe heightens his paranoia and Georgia Federation President Foster (guest star Leslie Hope) contemplates surrender. Meanwhile, Rachel and Aaron push through the Plains Nation into Colorado.
In an effort to regain some composure after a truly lackluster episode, many shows would do something amazing like feature a cold open where Billy Burke tosses an unconscious Timothy Busfield down an industrial laundry chute, and simply call it a day. But that’s not enough for Revolution. No, Revolution is willing to go the extra mile and also cast Michael Gladis (a.k.a. Paul Kinsey), as reparation for last week’s mostly unsuccessful episode, ‘Home.’

To that end, ‘The Love Boat’ also manages to throw Giancarlo Esposito back into thick of things, as Tom Neville joins Miles’ “adorable rebel cause” in an effort to thwart Monroe from weaponizing the anthrax virus. In order to do this, the two much put aside their differences and work together to retrieve Dr. Stephen Camp (Busfield) from Monroe’s men, which sounds like a fairly standard episode for Revolution, until it’s revealed that President Foster wants Camp’s anthrax for herself and the Georgia Federation.

And with all of these elements in play, the episode certainly runs at a much brisker pace and is, for the most part, more entertaining than ‘Home,’ but ultimately ‘The Love Boat’ offers little in the way of a consistent narrative, as most of the elements feel wildly disparate and much too scattered for this late in the season. In fact, there’s hardly anything for Busfield and Gladis to do other than be a face some people might remember having seen on another program.

Summary: In the season finale, an interview with a high-profile federal law enforcement agency forces Beckett to reconsider what she wants out of her job and out of her relationship with Castle. Meanwhile, the body of a young woman is found floating inside the water tank of a skid row flop house, but as the team investigate, they discover that her final resting place is just one of many strange things about her death.

Castle (Nathan Fillion) must have been a good boy this season, because the penultimate episode plays right up his conspiracy theorist’s alley. He also gets to play with a toy tank, and after he navigates it through a pretend minefield, he discovers that the tank’s camera can bit used for a bit of naughty, bedroom spy work.

Yes, ‘The Human Factor’ is very kind to our titular character indeed.

That’s a good thing, because with the groundwork laid for this episode and the trailer aired for the finale, the landscape of Castle could be changing. How drastic the change will be is still up for debate, but that’s getting a bit ahead of things for now. Because for now, the only issue Castle and Beckett (Stana Katic) have to work through is how to investigate a murder with no crime scene, no body, and no solid evidence to go on.

It’s a nice twist from your typical case: the dynamic duo gets a call to a crime scene, but by the time they get there, the feds have swooped in and are effectively keeping the local detectives in the dark.

Fortunately, Kate Beckett is like a dog with a bone when it comes to tracking down bad guys, and nothing the higher-ups throw at her can deter her progress. Inch by inch, she, Castle, Ryan (Seamus Dever) and Esposito (Jon Huertas) track down the clues that will lead them to whistleblower Dale Tanner’s killer.
